Popes Hall Farm

50 kWp Solar PV system installed at Popes Hall Farm in Kent.

In June 2015 Ecolution installed a 50 kWp ground mount solar PV system at Popes Hall Farm, based in The Weald of Kent.

Popes Hall Farm are long established family owned business, producing apples which they supply to a number of the major supermarkets throughout the UK. The farm grows, stores and packages up all of the apples on site before being delivered to their customer bases. On the farm they have a large cold storage building which runs 24 hours a day, next door to this is another building containing large machinery used for the packaging process.

For this ground mounted Solar PV installation we used CSUN 250w polycrystalline modules and Sunfixings ground mounting.

In the original designs an on roof Solar PV system was to be installed on top of the cold storage building. However, the technical assessment revealed that due to the building structure and aging asbestos, it would be more costs effective altering this to a ground mounted system. By making these changes it also guaranteed the 20 year performance warranty which may not have been the case if it remained as an on roof Solar PV system.

The agricultural sector is very competitive where many companies are fighting to win long term partnerships with large supermarkets, where price is a key factor. Therefore it was important to find a long term solution to streamline the businesses costs, one of which was their energy bills due to the large quantity of electricity that their cold storage unit uses as well as the packing machinery, which is why Solar PV has been a perfect solution for the business. Since the installation Popes Hall Farm is producing 42,500 kWh of free electricity per year with 22,482.50 C0₂ savings of kg.
