50 kWp Solar PV system installed for Severn Trent Centre in Coventry.

Severn Trent (Water Authority) awarded a contract to Ecolution, the UK’s leading renewable energy systems provider, following a competitive tender for the Severn Trent Centre, St John’s Street, Coventry, to deliver a model building which demonstrates how appropriate design and specification can deliver low energy operation and, more specifically, low carbon emissions. Ecolution were tasked to design and install a 25 kWp system on 10 degree A-frames over a steel framework provided by the main contractor, Balfour Beatty Engineering Services Ltd subcontracted to BAM Construction.

Ecolution were also asked to extend the framing system to accommodate a potential future extension to the photovoltaic system, ultimately to provide an output of 50 kWp. The installation was also required to integrate with a web-based monitoring system to be provided by other contractors.

Richard Jenkins, managing director, Ecolution, says: “To be involved in creating a building which is an exemplary example of low energy usage has been a real privilege. This has been an exciting and complex project for us as it became necessary to redesign the installation several times to accommodate air cooling systems on the roof and to overcome issues with shading. The site had exacting Health and Safety requirements and we were able to comply fully with these.”

He continues: “The overriding objective was to achieve an A-rated Energy Performance Certificate, whilst also achieving BREEAM standards. BREEAM (BRE Environmental Assessment Method) is the leading and most widely used environmental assessment method in construction and sets the standard for best practice in sustainable design. It has become the ultimate measure used to describe a building’s environmental performance. We are very proud to say that all of this has been achieved.”

Technologies installed at the Severn Trent Centre, St John’s Street, Coventry, by additional contractors include a ventilation heat recovery, combined heat and power, a biomass boiler and an absorption cooling plant.

Ecolution has been working with the building industry for over 25 years, providing renewable energy solutions for over a decade, with an expert team who have over 50 years combined experience in the design, installation and maintenance of integrated renewable technologies. Ecolution operates within the commercial and residential sectors, providing solar hot water systems, and solar photovoltaic systems.
