What are air source heat pumps?
Air source heat pumps absorb heat from the outside air in the same way that a fridge extracts heat from inside a property. The heat from the air is absorbed at a low temperature into a fluid, this fluid then passes through a compressor which increases the temperature transferring this into heating or hot water which is then used in radiators, underfloor heating, warm air convectors and general hot water supply for your home.
Unlike traditional boilers, air source heat pumps deliver heat at lower temperatures over much longer periods. However, during the colder months, you may find you need to keep your air source heat pump running constantly in order to heat your home efficiently.
Types of air source heat pumps?
Air to water
This type of system distributes heat via your wet central heating systems involving a boiler or heat exchanger and radiators. As heat pumps work more efficiently at lower temperatures compared to a traditional boiler system, it makes them ideal for underfloor heating or radiators as they give out consistent heat over longer periods of time.
Air to air
This type of system distributes the warm air via fans in order to heat your property. This type of system is limited to heating your property and is unlikely to be able to provide your property with hot water as well.
Benefits of air source heat pumps?
Reduce your energy bills
You can reduce you utility bills by utilising the free heating produced by your air source heat pump. These cost savings will considerable increase if you completely replace conventional electric heating systems or use other complementary renewable energy technologies.
Get paid for having a renewable heating system
The UK government’s Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI) is a scheme to reward you for using renewable heating systems throughout England, Scotland and Wales. There are two different incentives the first is for residential homes and the other non-domestic sectors such as businesses. The scheme offers a regular quarterly tariff payment for every kW of renewable heat your produce for 7 years. The tariff is determined by the type of technology you use. If you have more than one technology it is possible you can receive payments for each of these systems.
Can heat your home as well as your water
No need to spend additional money on separate systems, air source heat pumps are and all in one heating and hot water solution for your home. Not many renewable technologies do both, heat your hot water and your property.
Cheaper and easier to install compared to a ground source heat pumps
A ground source heat pump system can be intrusive as it requires digging up your garden to install and repair. Air source heat pumps as less disruptive as they are very similar to installing an air conditioning unit at your home.
Reduce your carbon footprint and help save the environment
Air source heat pumps are a renewable heating and hot water solution, meaning it doesn’t produce any harmful pollution. This technology is a way that each property can help towards protecting the environment and tackling climate change by utilising natural sustainable resources.
Air source heat pump maintenance services
Most manufacturer’s warranties are only upheld if your renewable technology is regularly maintained, which is why it is important to ensure your air source heat pump is serviced frequently by qualified engineers. This will not only guarantee your system’s performance throughout the year and prolong the lifetime of the technology but it will also save you money on repairs as most parts are covered by warranty for approximately 5 to 10 years.
We provide both planned maintenance as well as operations and maintenance (O&M) contracts for air source heat pumps. As part of these packages, one of our qualified and experienced engineers will attend your property to carry out a thorough annual service. We will also attend your property for any reactive / emergency repairs.
Reactive call outs are included in our maintenance contracts however if you are not a client of ours but are in need of an urgent repair that is not a problem, contact us today.
What’s included in your annual air source heat pump service?
• Check the expansion vessel charge pressure and top up as necessary.
• Check valves for freedom of movement, confirm that the water stops and both valves reset correctly.
• Check and clean the heat pump circuit filter.
• Open the primary/heating system safety valve and check that it discharges safely.
• Check and if necessary top up the concentration of the heating system anti-freeze.
• Check the primary/heating system pressure does not rise above the recommended value.
• Check and release any air from the primary/heating systems.
• Check correct rating and type of fuse is fitted on the electrical supply.
• Check for the correct operation and temperature setting of the thermostats.
• Check the operation of the motorised valves.
• Check yield performance.
• Issue annual service certificate.
