What are hot water cylinders?

Hot water cylinders also known as hot water storage tanks are used for storing hot water to heat a property. You can either have a direct or indirect system which refers to how the mains water is fed into the system. It can either be directly fed into the pressure vessel contained within a cylinder or indirectly into the cold water storage tank. It also refers to how the water is heated within the hot water cylinder, it can be either directly using an electric immersion heater or indirectly using a heat exchanger from a boiler.

Most properties use a combination of an indirect hot water cylinder to regular heat the water and an immersion heater as a back-up for an extra boost when required.

Types of hot water cylinders?

Vented hot water cylinder

The mains water is fed to and stored in the cold water storage tank, from there it is then distributed around the property to supply the appliances. If the property requires hot water, then this water is fed indirectly via the cold water storage tank to the water cylinder and warmed up using a heat exchanger. The flow of water supply relies on gravity which means there can be low pressure and in some cases, a pump is required to create a stronger flow.

Unvented hot water cylinder

The mains water works directly with the hot water cylinder. This is a similar process to the vented hot water cylinders but uses an immersion heater rather than a heat exchanger. Because the pressure comes directly from the mains water supply the water pressure is usually much better than vented hot water cylinders.

Benefits of hot water cylinders?

Reduced utility bills

With hot water cylinders you received hot water throughout your property for the same price as the mains supply of cold water compared to traditional boiler systems. Meaning end users receive hot water throughout the year without having to pay the extra.

No risk of frozen pipes

Compared to other traditional systems the water pipes are n the loft meaning there is less risk of them freezing during the winter. This reduces the risk of inconvenience and also could save you money in terms of repair in the long term.

Reduce your carbon footprint and help save the environment

Hot water cylinders usually work in conjunction with other renewable technologies such as solar hot water system in order to reduce the carbon footprint of the property. This technology is a way that each property can help towards protecting the environment and tackling climate change by utilising natural sustainable resources.

Hot water cylinders maintenance services

Most manufacturer’s warranties are only upheld if your renewable technology is regularly maintained, which is why it is important to ensure your hot water cylinders are serviced frequently by qualified engineers. This will not only guarantee your system’s performance throughout the year and prolong the lifetime of the technology but it will also save you money on repairs as most parts are covered by warranty for approximately 10 to 15 years. We provide both planned maintenance as well as operations and maintenance (O&M) contracts for hot water cylinders. As part of these packages, one of our qualified and experienced engineers will attend your property to carry out a thorough annual service of your hot water cylinder. We will also attend your property for any reactive / emergency repairs. We not only provide reactive call outs for our clients signed up to our maintenance contracts but will also attend emergency repairs for none clients as well.

What’s included in the annual service for hot water cylinders?

• Inspecting for signs of wear or damage.

• Checking to see that the correct manufacturer’s parts are fitted.

• Testing the temperature and pressure relief valves.

• Removing the line strainer and cleaning the filter.

• Checking the pressure of the expansion vessel.

• Setting the correct incoming water pressure.

• Annual service certificate issued.

• Provide service maintenance document.
