NEW DISNEY SOLAR FARMS WILL POWER TWO THEME PARKS!

Walt Disney World is known for its expansive theme parks packed with rides that have been entertaining millions of visitors for over 50 years now. However, whilst the parks have maintained the original look and magic over the decades, Disney knows that alternative energy sources are the future and behind the scenes, there have been a few renewable upgrades!

With the celebration of Earth Day this past month Dr Mark Penning, the vice president of Animals, Science and Environment at Disney announced that the parks will be adding a giant new solar facility, larger than the existing hidden mickey solar farm.

Located in the middle of Florida, aptly named the sunshine state, Disney’s decision to harness the suns energy is a natural step towards energy efficiency as the Orlando area receives an average of 300 sunny days out of the year.

This 50-megawatt facility will include no less than 500,000 solar panels to harness all that sunlight and will start in the next couple of months, with the goal of being completed by the end of the year.

This solar facility will span over 270 acres and generate enough renewable energy to power two of the theme parks located in Orlando. With up to 25 percent of Disney’s power needs met through this solar energy, the company will be able to lower their annual greenhouse gas emissions by more than 57,000 tons. This is equivalent to taking 9,300 cars off the roads every year!

All of these eco-friendly efforts help the Walt Disney Company move closer to their goal to cut their net greenhouse gas emissions in half by 2020 and with this newest addition to their renewable efforts we look forward to seeing what they accomplish next.
