What Lies Ahead for Solar PV in 2018?

As we all know Solar PV has reached new heights in the last couple of years and there are plenty of reasons to be excited when it comes to solar power in the UK, despite the reduction in Feed-In-Tariffs.

Last year saw new solar records being met and broken and there continues to be investment in major projects around the UK, some even on a subsidy-free basis.

Last year thanks to some great sunshine in the summer months, the UK met a record 24.3% or 8.7GW of its power purely from its host of solar panel both domestic and commercial around the country.

With this laying the basis of what the UK hopes to achieve this year we thought we’d have a look at what is likely to lie ahead this year for this renewable technology.

LOWER PRICES

According to recent research, the cost of solar panels has come down quite dramatically over the last few years. In 2011 the average cost of a 3.6 to 4 kWp system would have been around £12,000 however by the middle of June 2017 that cost was down to just under £6,500 on average!

One of the biggest drivers over the last decade has been lowering prices along with better technology. This ever-lowering price of solar is making it more of an attractive option for both homeowners and businesses alike which leads us to believe the market will continue to become more competitive over the next 12 months

RISE OF SUBSIDY FREE SOLAR

Since it was announced in the early part of 2016 that the Feed-In Tariffs would be stopped, the solar industry has had to come to grips with the prospect of developing free of any subsidies.

The first subsidy-free solar farm at Clayhill in Bedfordshire started producing electricity in November 2017, with the 30,000 solar panels being able to deliver enough power for 2.5K homes.

The Government is hailing subsidy free projects like Clayhill, and we expect to see a rise in this within the next year, with the UK producing a variety of subsidy-free projects.

IMPROVEMENTS TO SOLAR STORAGE

We are anticipating great things with solar storage over the next 12 to 18 months and there are already a number of different models of batteries for solar panels on the market, including Hycube’s extensive range of battery storage models

Towards the end of 2018, we may start finding many installers using more integrated approaches and incorporating software that makes battery storage easier to use.

What really needs to happen for battery storage though is an increase in customer awareness and a greater uptake of storage systems and that can only happen once the price comes down. This may be happening a little slower in the UK than in the rest of the world but the signs are good and we are more than excited to already be rolling out this exciting new technology
